CLIMATIC INDEXES
Asian Rice Index (ARI)
ARI integrates 1 harvested area, 2 yield, 3 production, 4 population, 5 caloric dependence on rice, 6 import dependence and anomalies in 7 temperature, 8 precipitation and 9 sea levels. The weighting of each component may periodically change and differs for the rice varietal which is predominantly consumed in a country.
UPDATE 4/17/24: Static factors (1 harvested area, 2 yield, 3 production, 4 population, 5 caloric dependence on rice, 6 import dependence) were re-verified or updated from data sources for April 2024 publication. Dynamic factors (anomalies in 7 temperature, 8 precipitation and 9 sea level) are updated for every month. All components were re-weighted for April 2024 computation.
UPDATE 7/15/24: Sea level anomaly factor has not changed since April 2024 and contributes to some stability in the index.
Asian Water Index (AWI)
AWI integrates 1 proportion of treated wastewater, geographic area attributable to 2 lakes, 3 rivers and 4 reservoirs, 5 population, 6 agricultural production, 7 population density and anomalies in 8 temperature, 9 precipitation and 10 sea level. The weighting of each component may periodically change and differs where a country depends primarily on ground water versus surface water sources.

The Asian Rice Index (ARI) and the Asian Water Index (AWI) are calculated and published around the 15th of each month based on underlying data available at the beginning of each month. The indexes aim to assess the availability of rice and water against consumption and climate stress factors and are published for individual Asian countries.
UPDATE 4/17/24: Static factors (1 proportion of treated wastewater, geographic area attributable to 2 lakes, 3 rivers and 4 reservoirs, 5 population, 6 agricultural production, 7 population density) were re-verified or updated from data sources for April 2024 publication. Dynamic factors (anomalies in 8 temperature, 9 precipitation and 10 sea level) are updated for every month. All components were re-weighted for April 2024 computation.
UPDATE 7/15/24: Sea level anomaly factor has not changed since April 2024 and contributes to some stability in the index.
